Think in sets of 3-4 songs
This promotes cohesion and balance across your entire playlist, particularly when you progress the intensity.
For example:
Song 1: joggy climb at 70 bpm, moderate resistance, simple choreography
Song 2: 90 bpm, intent is to increase the heart rate
Song 3: 110 bpm+, increase intensity using speed
Song 4 (new set): simple climb at 64 bpm, allow the room to recover and move as a team, restarts the progression
Align the song energy with your intent (and vice versa)
Not every song needs to be a 10/10 energy level (thank goodness!) You’ll probably hit every energy level at each point in the spectrum from recovery to peak - make sure the song supports that!
Add variety using genre, gender of the vocal and tone/vibe
This helps make your playlist feel dynamic, inclusive and representative!
If a DJ played it, would you stay on the dance floor?
You don’t have to be a DJ to know how to keep the engagement high and party going! The same levers a DJ uses to keep you dancing all night long can be used to keep your riders engaged. Consider the “karaoke factor,” using popular music and 4-on-the-floor beats; your class will fly by!
